During an interview, the King of Reggaeton explained that all he wanted to achieve as a musician was to influence the next generation of artists. He grew up in a tough neighborhood in his home country, Puerto Rico. He turned to music as his escape and found stellar success. Daddy Yankee spearheaded the music style that mixes hip-hop with reggae and Latin Caribbean music – thus, jumpstarting the reggaeton genre. He has influenced young Latin artists who are now also releasing albums with a reggaeton vibe. During an interview, Daddy Yankee shared, "In the neighborhoods where we grew up, the majority of us wanted to be drug dealers. Now when I visit, the majority of them want to be singers, so for me, this means a lot.”
Daddy Yankee has sold 20 million records worldwide, earned 148 Awards and 484 nominations, 10 Guinness World Records, and sold out countless shows throughout his career. "Now I get to enjoy with all of you everything that you have given me," he said in Spanish. "This genre, the people say that I made it global, but it was you all that gave me the key to open the doors to make this genre the biggest in the world. I confess that this is the biggest treasure I could have in my career."
